The possibility of the Florida Legislature convening a Special Session to address the alleged condo crisis is absurd. The real crisis was confronted two years ago when 98 lives were tragically lost in a dangerously unsafe condominium. In response, Governor DeSantis and the legislature implemented mandatory inspections and repairs for older buildings, as well as required reserve funds to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Should the legislature now backtrack on these vital protections? Should they abandon mandatory inspections, allow buildings to crumble, or eliminate the reserve funds that protect against future disasters? Doing so would not only put Floridians in harm’s way again but also dishonor the 98 victims of the Champlain Towers collapse.

The press may paint condo boards as villains for imposing necessary special assessments, but these measures are crucial for safety. Properly managed condominiums will see minimal impact from the new laws, while those that neglected repairs and reserves must now face the consequences.

Florida must stand firm in its commitment to safety. After all, ensuring the safety and proper funding of our condominiums is a significant achievement. It’s tough for some owners, but safety must always come first.
